Honey Collection in Sundarbans
Honey collection is undoubtedly the most adventurous, dangerous and physically exhausting activity in the Sundarbans. But the reward is immeasurable.
Most of the tourist trips usually travel to the eastern part of the forest. But Honey Collection trip has to take a complete different path. On 30th March late afternoon the adventure will start from Khulna by M.L. Bawali and will travel all the way to Burigoalini, the north western part of Sundarbans and the trip will end at Khulna/Mongla on the evening of 3rd April 2017.
During the 4 nights 4 days trip you’ll be spending 2 days and one night with the honey collectors inside the forest and half day visiting their house and family before venturing in the forest for honey collection. During this time you’ll be actually collecting the liquid gold yourself with the honey collectors.
Honey Collection In Sundarbans
The Sundarbans Forest Starts to bloom in march. This attracts swarms of the Giant Asian honey bees Apis dorsata to move in. They construct singe combs sometimes several meters high in tree sometimes just in eye-level the honey is collected by local honey hunters, The Mawalis, from 1st of April till end of May. They work in groups of 8 men living together on a boat as floating shelter While rushing through the forest the Mawalis keep contact by calling each other as soon as a honey comb is detected. They light smoke torches prepared from dry leaves for driving the bees away. Then they cut the honey Bearing parts of the comb quickly down, before the bee returns.
The Mawalis can earn a good amount of money within a few weeks from the sale of honey and wax. but the rest of the year they are to find other jobs. Tourist like to join the Mawalis from the opening ceremony at the forest office to the dense forest it’s a special adventure to follow them through mud and Mangrove roots and to share enthusiasm for the golden liquid
Day 0: BOARDING AND SETTLE IN
Get on-board anytime before evening. Have a cup of tea and slowly settle down. The boat will start early EVENING, depending on the tide, from Khulna and will start cruising towards the destination, Burigoalini for few hours. After a welcome dinner the boat will anchor at a convenient place, usually next to a forest office, for the night.
DAY 1: ENJOY THE CRUISE AND MEET THE HONEY COLLECTORS
Early morning the boat will resume it’s cruise and will cruise through the forest and along side the boundary villages till Late afternoon till it’s reach Burigoalini. Enjoy the frequent change of landscapes. On arrival you’ll get off the boat and meet the honey collectors on the land and visit their house and families. Enjoy the evening life of the village and come back to the boat for dinner. The boat will be staying next to forest office for the night.
DAY 2: DO THE PRAYER AND VENTURE IN TO THE FOREST
After breakfast get to the shore and witness the preparation for the journey. That will give you very different view of the adventure. Late morning there might be a communal prayer, if not the Honey Collectors and their families will have a prayer on their boat. Then let’s head to the forest. The boat will follow the honey collector’s boat(s) until they find a suitable place to start the adventure. Be prepared, as soon as they decide on a place, they will jump in and start rushing through the forest looking for honey hives. By sunset everyone comes back to the boat and the only thin g you would want is to heat the bed. But wait till the honey collector start pressing the honey.
DAY 3: THE ADRENAL RUSH
Hope you had a good sleep. Because you will running though the forest, through the canals collecting honey. Once you’ll get hang of it you’ll find it intoxicating. Because of the adrenal rush you’ll enjoy even the remote possibility of a tiger encounter. In the late afternoon, depending on the tide the boat will start heading back to Khulna/Mongla
DAY 4: RECHARGE YOURSELF ON THE CRUISE BACK
In the early morning you’ll have a ‘Silent Country Boat Trip In to The Creeks’. The boat will resume it’s cruise back while you’ll be having breakfast. Relax and enjoy the cruise. The trip will end at Khulna/Mongla after good bye dinner on board. And, Don’t forget to take some honey back to home for you and for your family.

Price for Sundarbans tours depends on many things. Duration and destination of the trip, number of people on-board and their nationality, if the trip is exclusive or mixed group, and many other things. So it is difficult to come up with just a price.
