Honey collection is undoubtedly the most adventurous, dangerous and physically exhausting activity in the Sundarbans. But the reward is immeasurable.

Most of the tourist trips usually travel to the eastern part of the forest. But Honey Collection trip has to take a complete different path. On The adventure will start from Khulna by M.L. Bawali and will travel all the way to Burigoalini, the north western part of Sundarbans.

During the 5 days 4 nights trip you’ll be spending 2 days and one night with the honey collectors inside the forest and half day visiting their house and family before venturing in the forest for honey collection. During this time you’ll be actually collecting the liquid gold yourself with the honey collectors.

Honey Collection In Sundarbans

The Sundarbans Forest Starts to bloom in march. This attracts swarms of the Giant Asian honey bees Apis dorsata to move in. They construct singe combs sometimes several meters high in tree sometimes just in eye-level the honey is collected by local honey hunters, The Mawalis, from 1st of April till end of May. They work in groups of 8 men living together on a boat as floating shelter While rushing through the forest the Mawalis keep contact by calling each other as soon as a honey comb is detected. They light smoke torches prepared from dry leaves for driving the bees away. Then they cut the honey Bearing parts of the comb quickly down, before the bee returns.

The Mawalis can earn a good amount of money within a few weeks from the sale of honey and wax. but the rest of the year they are to find other jobs. Tourist like to join the Mawalis from the opening ceremony at the forest office to the dense forest it’s a special adventure to follow them through mud and Mangrove roots and to share enthusiasm for the golden liquid

Overview

M.L. Bawali and it’s Captain & Crew will host this trip. Bawali is a 20 meters long beautiful tourist boat especially designed and built for Sundarbans Expeditions. Bawali has 6 rooms consisting a double and a single bead. It has 2 lounges. Lounges, accommodation area and wash area is completely separate from the crew area to ensure privacy. Visit Bawali page.
